How CPA Firms Can Show Up in AI Search
How does someone find you? And when they do, how do they know you’re a CPA firm they can trust?
AI is changing the way people search for professional services. A potential client may no longer start with a traditional Google search. They may ask ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or another AI tool who they should hire.
In this episode, I talk with Cassie Eagley, chief marketing strategist for Straightforward Consulting and Marketing, about how CPA firms can improve their visibility so both humans and AI understand who they are, what problem they solve, and why they should be recommended.
Cassie shared a story from her own business that every professional service firm should pay attention to.
She had built a successful marketing business, then launched a second brand that served a different niche. At the time, it seemed like a smart move. However, when referrals started slowing down, she realized her online presence had become confusing.
People, and AI tools, could no longer clearly understand who she served, what problem she solved, or why someone should choose her.
Once she cleaned up her positioning, consolidated her message, and became her own best client, referrals started coming back.
Why CPA Firm Positioning Matters More Now
For CPA firms, this matters because “we do accounting” is not enough.
Your firm needs to be clear about who you serve, what problems you solve, where you work if geography matters, and what success looks like for your clients.
If you work with contractors, dentists, retailers, car washes, small businesses, or another specific niche, say it clearly. If you serve a specific city or region, say that too.
AI tools rely on clear, repeated signals. If your message is vague or inconsistent, they may skip over you and recommend another firm instead.
The Four Parts of Visibility
Cassie calls her framework the visibility stack. It includes four parts: positioning, proof, path, and pulse.
Positioning is the first step. You need to be able to explain who you are, who you help, and what problem you solve in one clear breath.
Proof comes next. This includes testimonials, reviews, podcast appearances, articles, social media content, press mentions, and other third-party signals that confirm your expertise.
Path is the client journey. What you say online should match what the client actually experiences when they work with you.
Pulse is consistency. You can’t set this up once and forget about it. Fresh content, current proof, and ongoing visibility matter because AI search is not static.
AI Adds a New Layer to Referrals
Traditional referrals still matter. However, AI may now sit between the referral and the decision.
A prospect may ask a friend for CPA recommendations, then ask an AI tool which one is the best fit. If your firm does not show up clearly online, or if AI cannot understand what you do, you may not make the shortlist.
That means online visibility is no longer just about ranking on Google. It is also about being understood and recommended by AI tools.
Don’t Assume You’re Showing Up
One of Cassie’s suggestions is simple: test it.
Log out of your accounts. Use an incognito browser. Ask an AI tool the kind of question a real prospect would ask, such as, “Who should I hire as a CPA for my small business in my city?”
Then see whether your firm appears, whether the information is accurate, and which competitors are being recommended instead.
If you’re not showing up, or if the answer is confusing, that is a signal that your positioning and proof need work.
Choose one thing from this episode and try it. Ask AI whether it would recommend your firm, then look carefully at what comes back.
People Also Ask
How can CPA firms show up in AI search?
CPA firms can improve AI search visibility by clearly explaining who they serve, what problems they solve, where they work, and why they are a trusted choice. AI tools need clear and consistent signals to understand when to recommend your firm.
Why does positioning matter for CPA firms?
Positioning matters because “we do accounting” is too broad. Your firm needs to be specific about your niche, client type, location, and the results clients can expect. If your message is unclear, AI and prospects may move on to another firm.
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is the ability for your business to be found, understood, and recommended by AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or other large language models when someone asks for a CPA or advisor.
How can a CPA firm test its AI visibility?
Log out of your accounts, open an incognito browser, and ask an AI tool the kind of question a prospect would ask. For example, ask who to hire as a CPA for a specific business type in your city. Then see whether your firm appears and whether the information is accurate.
What is the visibility stack?
The visibility stack includes four parts: positioning, proof, path, and pulse. Together, they help make your firm easier for both people and AI tools to understand, trust, and recommend.
